Battle of Saratoga
The turning point of the Revolutionary War came on October 17, 1777, when British General Burgoyne lost the Battle of Saratoga to Colonial General Gates and his army.British General Howe abandoned the plan he had made with General Burgoyne, so instead of meeting General Burgoyne in the city of Albany, as they had planned, General Howe sailed south to Philadelphia, the Capital city of the colonists. While Howe sailed to Philadelphia, Colonial General Gates positioned his troops between the city of Albany and General Burgoyne’s army. When the two armies clashed at the city of Saratoga, 14% of General Burgoyne’s soldiers were killed, while the remaining 86% of the British army surrendered all of their weapons to the victorious colonial army. While General Howe succeeded in taking Philadelphia, General Burgoyne suffered the second most important British defeat in the Revolutionary War. It was this Colonial victory that convinced the French to enter the war on the colonial side and provide supplies(food, gunpowder, lead, cannons, clothing) and soldiers to the Continental Army.
Fun Fact: The Battle of Saratoga was actually two separate battles: one at Freeman’s Farm, the other at Bemis Heights.
