The Battle at Bunker Hill
On the night of June 16, 1775 the colonists dug a square hole in Breeds Hill as a fort (so they would be closer to the British line/ position). The next morning the British were shocked to see the Colonists were THREATENING them. The British were ordered to attack the colonists even though the colonists had a superior military position. General Howe could have surrounded the Americans with the British ship but instead thought the Americans would retreat when taken head-on. The colonists waited until they could see the whites of the British men’s eyes (about 15 paces away) to open fire. Many British soldiers were killed and the rest retreated back down the hill. This happened two more times.
By the third wave the colonists were out of AMMO and began using hand-to-hand combat. The British eventually took over the hill. This battle was mistakenly named Bunker Hill even though it was fought on Breed’s Hill.
